Amazon has been testing the option of paying for orders in cash in various regions for some time now. The offer is aimed at customers who do not want to pay by credit card and prefer to pay amounts directly. Cash payments seem to be attracting interest in one country in particular, where Amazon is now introducing it across the board.

Classic payment at more than 35,000 locations

We’re talking about Italy, where customers can pay for Amazon orders in cash nationwide for the first time. Amazon had already introduced this payment option in collaboration with Western Union at the end of 2021. However, through a new cooperation with PuntoLis, the network will be expanded from 5,000 to more than 35,000 payment points – and will also be activated for all Amazon.it customers.

PuntoLis is an Italian payment and service network through which you can pay bills in local stores, make transfers, top up cards and use other financial services. The network includes, among other things, kiosks, tobacco shops, bars and collection points.

Amazon has previously tested similar partnerships with Western Union in the US and other countries under the PayCode name. However, from April 2026, this service will only be available in Colombia and the Philippines.

This is how cash payment works on Amazon

Customers place orders on Amazon.it as usual, but at checkout they have the option to select the “Paga in Contanti nel Punto Vendita più vicino” option instead of credit cards or other payment methods. A link will also appear there with a list of nearby payment points.

After confirming the order, customers receive an email with a barcode and a numeric code, which also explains the next steps. Payment must then be settled within 72 hours at a PuntoLis or Western Union location. The code is shown there and the outstanding amount is paid in cash.

Customers receive a paper receipt and Amazon then informs them via email as usual that the payment has been received and sends a shipping confirmation. Amazon will automatically cancel the order if payment is not received after the 72-hour period. In this case, a new order is required.

Not all products can be paid in cash

Excluded are, among other things, used warehouse items (Amazon seconda mano), digital content such as e-books or MP3 files and gold coins. Prime subscriptions, one-click purchases and Amazon gift vouchers are also exempt from cash payments. There are no additional fees for using the service.

An item paid for in cash can be returned under the usual Amazon conditions. However, the refund will be in the form of a gift voucher for Amazon.it and not in cash.

Cash payment is not yet available everywhere. In a short test, TECHBOOK was able to set the payment method as default, but was unable to select it during checkout. According to Amazon, this is because it is rolling out the function gradually and all Amazon.it users will only be able to access it in the coming weeks.
