While seeking to understand unexplained infertility, an American couple discovered an extremely rare allergy: an immunological incompatibility between their DNA which prevents them from procreating naturally.

Alex Murphy Klein and her husband Paul thought they were dealing with “classic” infertility. Married in 2023, they had started trying to have a child expecting a quick pregnancy. But after a year without results, medical examinations did not reveal any abnormality in either of them.

Helpless in the face of this unexplained infertility after having consulted numerous doctors, the couple then turned to in vitro fertilization (IVF), but the first attempt failed. As a new procedure loomed, Alex Klein expressed his doubts. “I had to brake,” she explained during her testimony on This Morning, believing that something had not been identified.

“My body said: we are attacking”

The couple then ordered genetic blood tests from a specialist company. And the results revealed the unthinkable: an immunological incompatibility, which causes the young woman’s immune system to react to her partner’s DNA, assimilating it to a foreign element that must be expelled, preventing embryo implantation. “My body said: ‘We’re attacking,’” she summarized.

A discovery experienced as a relief tinged with a certain distress. Finally having an explanation put an end to the couple’s uncertainty, but also confronted them with a feeling of helplessness. Because to circumvent this immune reaction, the medical path is tortuous. Doctors must go through therapy involving injections of the father-to-be’s processed blood cells to help his partner’s body develop tolerance.

On January 5, the date of their appearance on the show, the young woman had already received four injections and had been following the protocol for around six months, accompanied by treatments intended to regulate her immune response. Hoping that their journey to parenthood, strewn with obstacles, will finally have a happy outcome.
