When it comes to high-end earphones, the question is no longer with you can get excellent quality, but how fair it is to pay for it. On one front we have the Apple AirPods Pro 2the benchmark that defined market expectations, both in terms of performance and price. On the other, a formidable opponent like him Huawei FreeBuds 7iwhich launches its challenge not on absolute quality, but on the ground of value, with a price three times lighter. It is a clash between two product philosophies, put in place by two technology giants. The question I ask myself is simple and brutal: are the 170 euro difference really noticeable in everyday use? I put both models to the test to find out, analyzing every detail to give you the means to make an informed choice.
A Price Gap That Makes You Think
Table of Contents
Let’s start with the elephant in the room: the price. At the time of this review, the AirPods Pro 2 stand at €249while the Huawei FreeBuds 7i can be found at around €79. It’s simple math: with the budget for one pair of AirPods, you can buy three pairs of FreeBuds. This fact alone sets the tone for the entire comparison and forces us to evaluate each aspect not in absolute terms, but in relation to cost.
Ergonomics and Comfort: The Battle of Detail
At first glance, the wearability seems almost identical. Weight, in-ear stability and overall comfort are very similar for both models. However, the difference emerges in the details that matter during long listening sessions.
- Apple AirPods Pro 2: They deliver well five pairs of silicone ear tips of different sizes, ensuring more precise customization. The material itself is slightly softer and more malleable. During an intercontinental flight, this softness translated into a comfort superiorealmost completely eliminating the feeling of fatigue in the ear canal.
- Huawei FreeBuds 7i: Includes four pairs of eartips, more than enough for most users. Although they are comfortable, the slightly more rigid silicone makes them a little less “invisible” after several hours of continuous use.
Comfort verdict: Narrow victory for Apple. The AirPods Pro 2 are slightly more comfortable in the long runbut the FreeBuds 7i still offer excellent ergonomics for everyday use.
Noise Canceling (ANC): Apple Creates a Bubble of Silence
Here the difference is felt, literally. I tested both earbuds in the worst possible scenario: a turbulent airplane flight filled with loud noises.
The AirPods Pro 2 offer terrible noise cancellation. As soon as you put it on, you are enveloped in a real bubble of silence, with a reduction in external noise that I consider among the85% and 90%. The suppression is constant, powerful and intelligent: it manages to discriminate human voices, attenuating them without completely canceling them, unlike background noise which is almost eliminated. The “Adaptive” mode is also impeccable in dynamically managing environmental sounds.
Even the FreeBuds 7i they perform admirably, confirming Huawei’s tradition in this field, with a noise reduction estimated at between 75% and 85%. However, their “Dynamic” mode is sometimes a little less precise, with slight and perceptible changes in the intensity of the suppression as the surrounding noises vary.
Verdict on the ANC: Clear victory for Apple. If noise cancellation is your top priority and you’re looking for the most isolation possible, the AirPods Pro 2 are simply on another level.
Audio Quality: Two Philosophies Compared
Both earbuds sound surprisingly good, but with different approaches.
- AirPods Pro 2 (Vote 9/10): Audio is characterized by full, warm and enveloping bass and incredibly crystalline highs. This excellence at the extremes of the sound spectrum tends to slightly overshadow the medium frequencies, such as the voice, which is slightly less present. The general effect is a powerful and exciting, almost “cinematic” sound.
- FreeBuds 7i (Vote 8.5/10): The approach is more balanced. The bass is present and full-bodied (tested with songs like “Tuesday”), but slightly drier and less warm than the AirPods. The highs are less bright. This “limit” at the two extremes has a positive effect on the medium frequencies: the voice is clearer and more in the foregroundmaking listening to podcasts or vocal tracks extremely enjoyable.
Verdict on audio quality: It’s a matter of taste. The AirPods Pro 2 offer a more “Hi-Fi” and impactful experience, while the FreeBuds 7i offer a more balanced and perhaps more faithful listening experience on the voice.
Quality on Call: An Unexpected Draw
I made dozens of calls in all conditions: on a bike, on a plane, in the silence of an office and even on a very noisy airport shuttle bus. Asking my interlocutors for feedback, the result was unanimous: the quality of my voice was perceived as excellent and clear with both models. The suppression of background noise on calls is excellent on both, ensuring perfect conversations even in difficult contexts.
Verdict on the calls: An almost perfect draw. Both are absolutely reliable work and communication tools.
Autonomy and Charging
- AirPods Pro 2: Circa 7-8 hours of listening with ANC active. The case guarantees approximately 3 full charges and supports the wireless charging (Qi and MagSafe).
- FreeBuds 7i: Circa 5-6 hours with ANC on. However, the case offers an extra charge (4 in total), but it recharges exclusively via USB-C cable.
In daily use (gym, travel), the difference in autonomy of the individual earphones is barely noticeable, since they are often placed in the case. The real differentiator is wireless charging, a convenience that is difficult to give up once you get used to it.
Functionality, Controls and Ecosystem
The controls are a subjective win for Huawei. The FreeBuds are managed with taps and swipes on the body of the earphone, a system that I find more intuitive and comfortable than “squeezing” the stem of the AirPods, especially if you are wearing gloves or a helmet. The touch also tends to push the earphone more into place, while the “click” of the AirPods sometimes moves them slightly.
As for the software, the experience is linked to the ecosystem:
- AirPods Pro 2: Seamlessly integrated into iOS, with exclusive features such as spatial audio with head tracking, precise location via “Where is” and reading notifications. On Android they work like normal Bluetooth earphones, but lose all customization.
- FreeBuds 7i: L’app AI Life offers an almost identical experience on both iOS (downloadable from the App Store) and Android. It allows you to customize the controls, manage the ANC modes and equalization. Attention: on Android, the app must be downloaded from the official Huawei website and not from the Play Store, a small extra “fuss” that requires authorization to install apps from external sources.
Conclusions: Who Wins? The Absolute Best or the Best Buy?
The conclusion is the one anticipated at the beginning: there is not a single winner, but two winners in two different categories.
Apple AirPods Pro 2 are, without a doubt, the best true wireless noise-canceling earphones on the market. They offer a premium experience in every aspect: unrivaled ANC, spectacular audio quality and perfect integration with the Apple ecosystem. If you have an iPhone and your budget allows it, they are the definitive purchase.
Huawei FreeBuds 7i are the absolute “best buy”.. At a third of the price, they offer an experience that’s close to 85-90% of that of AirPods. The audio quality is excellent, the noise cancellation is very effective and the call quality is identical to that of its much more expensive rival. They’re the smartest choice for those with Android phones, those on a budget, or simply those looking for the best possible value for their money.
The final choice is up to you and your priorities. But one thing is certain: whatever your decision, it is really difficult to go wrong with these two models.
