Airbnb, the accommodation booking platform, has announced a three-year partnership with the Tour de france and the Tour de France Femmes, aiming to expand its presence in rural France through the prestigious cycling events.
The partnership with Amaury Sports institution, the race organizer, will extend through the 2027 editions. Airbnb will promote rental properties along the 3,339-kilometer Tour de France route, which crosses several countries.
The collaboration will also provide unique experiences, including rides with former cyclists such as Britain’s Mark Cavendish,meet-and-greets,and cycling masterclasses during both the men’s and women’s tours.
Airbnb stated that this new agreement builds on the success of the Paris Olympic Games last year, during which they facilitated 700,000 bookings.
The company also maintains a partnership with the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic committee, initially signed in 2019 and extended in 2023.
That agreement allowed athletes to apply for a $2000 grant to help cover travel and accommodation costs while training and competing in preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Strategic Shift to Rural Markets
This Tour de France partnership is part of Airbnb’s broader global expansion strategy, particularly as demand softens in the US and the company faces pushback in popular European tourist destinations.
Airbnb said the new deal will build on its success at last year’s Paris Olympic Games, which saw 700,000 bookings delivered during the event.
Recent actions, such as the Spanish government blocking over 65,000 holiday rental listings in densely populated cities, reflect the challenges Airbnb faces in urban areas.
Airbnb’s emphasis on less-visited rural regions indicates a strategic pivot away from cities amid increasing regulations and local opposition.
This year’s Tour de France is scheduled from July 5 to 27, while the Tour de France Femmes will take place from july 26 to August 3.
