Chicago Braces as More Virulent MPX Clade Emerges

Chicago’s efforts to combat mpox, the virus formerly known as monkeypox, continue even as cases have significantly declined from their 2022 peak. However, the emergence of a more virulent strain in the U.S. has raised concerns among health officials, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and access to vaccination.

A Relapse in Attention?

While weekly mpox cases have dropped to single digits in Chicago, experts warn that this situation shouldn’t be a cause for complacency. Dr. Aniruddha Hazra, associate professor of medicine and director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program at the University of Chicago, emphasizes that "it’s concerning that it’s still circulating" in the U.S. Adding to the worry, a new, more deadly strain of mpox, Clade I, has been detected in California. This strain has been responsible for over 600 deaths in the Congo and has spread to other countries like the Philippines, Sweden, and Thailand.

Focusing on Vulnerable Communities

Chicago has been praised for its proactive approach to mpox prevention and response, focusing on vaccinating vulnerable populations and providing adequate information to the community. The city has allocated $1.66 million for its mpox response, funding vaccination events, case tracking, and weekly meetings with health organizations.

Organizations like Calor, a Latino nonprofit focusing on HIV care, play a crucial role in reaching underserved communities through dedicated vaccine events. They act as a bridge for people to access long-term care and resources. "Chicago has done a great job because the health department has led (mpox) efforts," Alfredo Flores, Calor’s program manager, stated.

However, access to the vaccine remains a concern as Jynneos, the primary mpox vaccine, is now commercialized. This means uninsured individuals might face financial barriers in accessing the life-saving vaccine, highlighting a potential crisis for vulnerable populations.

Call to Action

The continued presence and evolution of mpox demand ongoing vigilance and proactive action. We must continue to promote awareness, prioritize access to vaccination for all, and support public health initiatives that effectively target vulnerable groups.

Let’s work together to ensure that mpox doesn’t become a significant threat again.
