Sauna Fire at Vienna Sports Center Causes Injuries and Closure

Swift Response to Donaustadt Blaze

A fire erupted in the sauna of the ASKÖ sports center, located on Bernoullistraße in Vienna-Donaustadt, prompting a rapid response from the city’s professional fire brigade this Thursday morning. Emergency responders were able to extinguish the blaze relatively quickly, utilizing two high-pressure hoses and deploying firefighters with respiratory protection gear, according to official statements.

Injuries Sustained During Initial Entry

Tragically, the initial entry into the building proved hazardous. According to Magistrate Department 68 (MA 68), two firefighters sustained minor injuries due to a sudden deflection shortly after entering the premises. This incident resulted in firefighters being knocked to the ground. A third individual was also reported to have sustained minor injuries. The exact nature of the deflection remains under examination.

The intensity of the fire quickly escalated. Window panes were dislodged and ejected outward, and flames reportedly spread rapidly, reaching the building’s facade and extending towards the roof.

Containment and Aftermath

Reinforcements arrived, and by approximately 10:30 a.m.,the fire was fully extinguished. Firefighters then employed high-performance ventilation equipment to clear the building of smoke and fumes. Though, the ASKÖ sports center will remain closed until further notice. Extensive cleaning of the ventilation system and affected rooms is now required before the facility can safely reopen to the public.

Vienna ASSKÖ released a statement expressing their commitment to resuming sports activities as soon as possible. The professional rescue services provided medical attention to the three injured individuals.

The Broader Context of Sauna Fires

While the cause of this specific fire is still under investigation, sauna fires, though relatively uncommon, can pose significant risks.According to a 2024 report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), electrical malfunctions and improperly stored combustible materials are leading causes of sauna fires in residential settings. While this incident occurred in a commercial sports center, the underlying principles of fire safety remain crucial.

“Regular inspection and maintenance of sauna heating elements, proper ventilation, and strict adherence to safety guidelines are essential to prevent future incidents.”
