The Cancer Spring, organized by the Institute of Communication and Information on Cancer (ICIC), returns to Perpignan for a day of exchanges and free information intended to better understand prevention and care related to the disease.
According to Public Health France, more than 400,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in France, including around 4,200 in the Pyrénées-Orientales. This Saturday, March 28, the Cancer Spring, organized by the ICIC at the Palais des Congrès in Perpignan, from 2 to 6:15 p.m., will allow the general public to discuss directly with specialists on prevention, therapeutic advances and supportive care.
In the Pyrénées-Orientales, cancer remains a public health priority: its incidence exceeds the regional average according to the Regional Health Agency. This day promotes health democracy, by centering the patient in their care. “Behind each file, there is a person, a story, not just an illness”recalls Déborah Climent, coordinator of the ICIC. Today, the disease is cured in 55% of cases; for others, it becomes chronic, requiring explained and supported follow-up.
Stands from local associations (Ligue contre le cancer, RKS, La Tête et les Jambes) will be accessible throughout the day for personalized listening and advice.
Prevention aims to reduce the 35% of cancers attributed to tobacco, alcohol and obesity. Early detection remains vital: 92% survival rate for breast cancer detected at the initial stage, compared to only 14% at an advanced stage. Therapeutic progress now limits toxicities, improving patients’ quality of life.
The La Tête et les Jambes center (Technosud 2, Perpignan) also offers free care to patients and their loved ones (psychological support, physiotherapy, well-being workshops).
