Qinwen Zheng Seeks a Turnaround as her Dubai Debut Backfires
The Chinese tennis star embarked on her 2025 campaign with mixed results, winning only one match out of four. Recently, her string of losses continued in Dubai.
Zheng had a strong start to her season at the Australian Open, defeating Anca Todoni in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1. However, the triumph was short-lived as she suffered a surprising defeat to Laura Siegemund in the second round.
Traveling to the Middle East, Zheng faced another setback at the Qatar Open WTA 1000, losing to Ons Jabeur in straight sets, 4-6, 2-6. Her hopes of winning her second match of the year were dashed in Dubai.
Qinwen Zheng Skips Press Conference Due to Unusual Injury
Zheng’s Dubai match against Peyton Stearns began promisingly as she won the first set, 6-3. However, she struggled in the second and third sets, losing 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.
Following the loss, Zheng skipped her scheduled press conference. Explaining her absence, she stated, “The weather was quite hot, and I had a long day waiting. My fingers started to cramp and stuck together, making it difficult to serve. Then, I experienced cramps in both calves, something I’ve never faced before.”
Zheng Faces Challenges with Thin Top Ten Record
With a record of 1-3, Zheng stands out with the worst win-loss ratio among players ranked in the top ten on the WTA Tour.
| Win % Rank | WTA Rank | Name | Win % | Win/Loss Record |
| 1 | 6 | Madison Keys | 93 | 14-1 |
| 2 | 1 | Aryna Sabalenka | 86 | 12-2 |
| 3 | 2 | Iga Swiatek | 82 | 14-3 |
| 4 | 7 | Elena Rybakina | 75 | 12-4 |
| 5 | 3 | Coco Gauff | 75 | 9-3 |
| 6 | 5 | Jessica Pegula | 67 | 8-4 |
| 7 | 10 | Paula Badosa | 60 | 9-6 |
| 8 | 4 | Jasmine Paolini | 60 | 6-4 |
| 9 | 9 | Emma Navarro | 60 | 6-4 |
| 10 | 8 | Qinwen Zheng | 25 | 1-3 |
Standing alone with a negative win-loss record, Zheng must secure more victories to retain her position in the top ten.
Just three months ago, Zheng reached the WTA Finals final, narrowly falling to Coco Gauff in a three-set match. She now aims to regain that form over the coming months.
Zheng’s Upcoming Tournaments
Zheng will compete at the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, California. Unlike some top contenders, she will not participate in the WTA 500 and 250 tournaments in Mexico and the United States.
Her performances in the past years have not been stellar at these events, with only a few victories across multiple appearances. Notably, her best showing came in Miami two years ago, where she reached the fourth round.
