As visitors reach specific points, a 3D virtual robot named Cooper educates them about the local flora, fauna, and rich history through engaging animations.

Users can choose to explore the preserve on their own or opt for a guided tour led by a ranger who is familiar with the app’s features. The McClellan Ranch app took around a year and a half to develop through the collaboration between Cupertino and Balance Studios. You don’t need someone to guide you through it. You can come here even when the shop is closed or when the nature center’s closed and still get the information, so that’s wonderful.”

Estella Risinger, executive director of the California Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education, highlighted the app’s importance in connecting children with nature. “Being able to marry these two worlds by giving young people access to a tool which they’re probably very familiar with to really help foster and deepen this connection to the natural world is really critical,” Risinger emphasized.
