Romania Frost Warning: Health Ministry Advice & Safety Tips

“In these days with extremely low temperatures, the Ministry of Health recommends the population to listen to the advice of doctors, to avoid traveling in open spaces and exposure to the cold, to follow the rules of hygiene to avoid illness and to consume foods rich in proteins, fruits and vegetables”, according to information published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Health on Facebook.

In order to protect themselves from the cold, the Ministry of Health recommends citizens to avoid traveling outdoors, but also to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, especially of the hands and feet, in order to prevent frostbite.

Romanians are urged not to leave the house without warm clothes, hats, gloves, scarf, and appropriate footwear, but also to avoid moisture.

In terms of nutrition, citizens are advised to eat foods rich in protein, fruits and vegetables, but also to avoid alcohol consumption.

The Ministry of Health also recommends observing hygiene rules, especially washing hands with soap and water.

Regarding heat, Romanians are encouraged to heat their homes properly and not to use improvised installations, in order to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Recommendations for children and the elderly

The Ministry also issued a series of recommendations addressed to vulnerable people. The elderly and the chronically ill, but also for children.

Elderly people, especially those with cardiac/respiratory conditions, must avoid traveling and crowded places,” reads the information published by the Ministry.

As for children, the Ministry of Health warns that they should not be left waiting alone in parked cars. Parents are also advised to avoid long journeys in unheated cars.

The Ministry of Health monitors, through DSP, the situation in hospitals in order to receive and admit as many patients as possible. Also, the county ambulance services will supplement the number of crews and intervention vehicles, if necessary, according to the information.

ANM announced, on Tuesday morning, that the cold period will extend until the end of February.
