Researchers at Warwick University’s Festival of Innovation are working on a revolutionary custom-made headset designed to deliver tiny doses of scent directly to the gamer. This headset uses essential oils to replicate various aromas, providing an immersive experience. The technology has been tested with classic arcade game Daytona Racing, delivering the unmistakable scent of petrol while racing and rubber-smelling brake pads when braking.

However, quick and accurate scent switching is a significant challenge. Scent overlaps and remains in the air, making it difficult to seamlessly transition between different scenes. This is where the “micro-dosing” method comes in, designed to overcome such obstacles.

Is There a Point?

The question arises: does adding scent to games serve a purpose? Professor Alan Chalmers from Warwick University believes that for simulations, like pilot training, smell is crucial for realistic environments. He sees potential for consumer gaming too, particularly in creating unforgettable fantasy worlds.

This technology is still in its experimental stages, with Sony also exploring similar concepts at tech showcases. Their Future Immersive Entertainment Concept demo includes environmental scents to complement the gameplay.

However, this is still niche technology, not yet a standard feature in most gaming setups. While realistic visuals and sound remains important, new tech like this could redefine what gamers expect from their experience.

Gamer Feedback

When gamers were asked about the smell technology, reactions were mixed. Shoubna Naika-Taylor, an esports lecturer, found it immersive and exciting. However, Juris Kozirev, another student, said the scents didn’t always match intended smells. The motor oil smell, for example, could be flowers, and he found himself more relaxed rather than competitive.

The consensus seems to be that while the technology shows promise, there are significant hurdles to overcome before it becomes mainstream.
