40 urban and rural districts in Baden-Württemberg are affected by the delta variant of the corona virus. She has not yet appeared in the remaining four. To counteract the further spread, the state government is relying on the corona vaccine from Johnson & Johnson.

At the beginning of July, 30,000 additional doses of the American vaccine Johnson & Johnson are to be made available to the country by the federal government. As the “Faz” reports, Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of Health Manfred Lucha (Greens) is planning to use Johnson & Johnson from July in all districts where the Delta mutant causes frequent new infections.
More than forty new Delta infections occurred in the districts of Heidenheim, Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Karlsruhe. 1500 Johnson & Johnson cans are planned there. 1000 cans go to Heidelberg, the Rhein-Neckar district, Tübingen, Karlsruhe and Heilbronn, where more than 20 cases have been detected. In the remaining cities and districts, 500 to 700 cans are to be made available.
However, it is currently unclear whether the vaccine, which only has to be administered once to develop its effectiveness against the coronavirus, also protects against the delta virus variant. In addition, the possibility of a booster is already being discussed. As a result, despite a Johnson & Johnson dose, Delta may require a second dose of a different vaccine or a second adjusted dose of Johnson & Johnson.
The mRNA vaccines are the benchmark
Dr. Ulf Dittmer, director of the Institute for Virology at the University Hospital Essen, even demanded that certain vaccines no longer be used, reported “t-online”. “When it comes to vaccines, the mRNA vaccines remain the benchmark. For example, I consider it irresponsible to also give the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to company and family doctor practices. Only one vaccination is necessary here, but the protective effect against infection is correspondingly reduced. This is also unacceptable in view of the delta variant. “

Studies are still ongoing and the results will not appear until September. The US virologist Angela Rasmussen calls on Twitter to act faster. There is currently no leeway to wait for data. She herself received Johnson & Johnson and later opted for a so-called mRNA booster with the vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer. She also advises the American health authorities to proceed in this way.
Regardless of the delta variant, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine delivers around 65 percent effectiveness against the original coronavirus in all age groups. According to studies, a particularly difficult course and a necessary hospitalization should be reduced by 100 percent through the one-time vaccination with the American vaccine.
