Riga‘s 2Annas Film festival: A Hub for Innovation and collaboration

Exploring New Horizons in Baltic Cinema

The International Short Film Festival 2Annas, held annually in Riga, is not just a showcase of cinematic talent; it’s a dynamic platform designed to foster collaboration, critical thinking, and innovation within the film industry. This year’s festival, which took place from April 4th to 10th, featured a diverse range of events aimed at nurturing emerging talent and sparking new dialogues.

Industry Days: Forging Connections and Cultivating Ideas

Central to the festival’s mission are its Industry Days, organized in partnership with the National Film Center, Creative europe Media Office in Latvia, and the Goethe institute in riga. These days provide invaluable networking opportunities for industry professionals, promoting the exchange of ideas and the growth of new film projects. All public events are free, ensuring accessibility for anyone interested in participating.

Illuminating the City: A Wall is a Screen

One of the most unique and engaging events was the collaboration with the internationally recognized initiative, A wall is a Screen. Originating in Germany, this project transforms urban landscapes into impromptu cinemas by projecting films onto building facades.Participants embarked on a “cinema walk” through the center of Riga, with the city itself becoming a giant, ever-changing screen. The element of surprise was key, with only the starting point at the Latvian National Museum of Art revealed in advance. Films were screened in their original languages with English subtitles, ensuring accessibility for an international audience.

Critical Discourse: Workshops and Discussions

2Annas is committed to fostering critical engagement with cinema. The festival hosted The Workshop of Young Critics, an initiative dedicated to cultivating the next generation of film critics in the Baltics. Additionally, a sound post-processing creative workshop explored the art of Foley, enriching participants’ understanding of sound design in film.

Navigating the Festival Landscape: A Panel Discussion

A key discussion, Cinema between borders: how to navigate the film festival in the world?, addressed the challenges filmmakers face in getting their work seen. Simone Bardoni, artistic director of the Concrete Film Festival and curator and film distributor at Lights On, moderated the discussion at the Cannabis Cultural Center. The panel explored strategies for developing a festival strategy, especially considering a film’s genre and format.

When the movie is complete, it needs to find its own audience. But how do you directly develop the festival strategy, especially taking into account the genre and format of the film?

Genre Bending: Creative Potential and Definition Problems

Another thought-provoking discussion, Genre hybrids – their creative potential and definition problems, delved into the increasing trend of genre blending in contemporary cinema. Riina Mikkonen, tampere Film festival Manager and curator, led the conversation, also held at the Cannabis Cultural Center. The panel explored the motivations behind genre fusion and the challenges of defining these inter-genre works, speculating on the future evolution of genres.

Challenging Conventional Structures: Collective Filmmaking

Astra Zoldner, a researcher, curator, and director, delivered a lecture on Collective and involvement filming methods. This presentation explored choice approaches to filmmaking that challenge traditional hierarchical structures, seeking more collaborative and participatory methods. This reflects a growing interest in decentralized and community-driven approaches to creative production, mirroring trends seen in other artistic fields.
