With the program “We protect schoolsthem ”during this 2020 has intervened and will intervene in 22 schools and schools of Barcelona to improve environments and ensure that they are insurance.
With the deployment of this project you want to move towards pacification of urban space that surrounds these facilities and help to breathe a higher quality air and to have more meeting spaces and less accidents and noise.
The measures will benefit 8,468 students and will involve 4,352 m2 won on the asphalt, 5 prioritized streets for pedestrians, 4 fewer traffic lanes and 37 new spaces for spontaneous play, and they have a budget for this 2020 of 1.3 million euros.
Program that prioritizes boys and girls
This program is inspired by the experience of initiatives such as ecochaflanes, with which access to schools in L’Eixample, refuge schools or the
and you want to answer the citizen demands to protect so priority to boys and girls from the city and make schools and its surroundings a safe and full of life.
Furthermore, it is framed within a city model where schools become nerve centers and where special attention is paid to public space.
The first pacification was held last January in the Grèvol School, in Sant Martí, and has also been completed between June and July in the Viladomat Institute, in L’Eixample. These days are already underway or work will begin soon in 9 centers, and more will start in October, so that by the end of the year the environment of 22 educational facilities has been improved.
Among the schools where its environment will be pacified during this year are: the Grèvol School, the Viladomat Institute, the L’Estel School, the Escola Bressol Municipal Manigua, the Doctor Ferran i Clua School, the L’Alzina Institute, the L ‘School Univers, the Petit Univers Municipal Nursery School, the Sagrada Família-Sardenya School, the Pia Balmes School, the Poeta Foix School, the Marillac Educational Center, the Escolàpies Llúria Educational Center, the 9 Graons School, the Carlit School, the Xirinacs School, the Sagrat Cor-Ribes School, the Mas Casanovas School, the Water School, the Teresa Pàmies Institute, the Pia Sant Antoni School, and the Rubén Darío School.
The actions are fundamentally based on two types of measures, which are obtained from both structural and tactical interventions and which are combined and adapted to each case.
The space for vehicles is reduced by eliminating traffic lanes and parking spaces, and the maximum speed allowed is reduced to 20 km / h, lighting is improved and safety elements are installed. The entrance to the pacified space is marked with orange paint and a specific horizontal logo and the volunteer program for traffic control is implemented at the time of entry and exit of class.
Improvement of habitability
In the access and exit points of the centers, square spaces are created with a surface of no less than a circumference of 10 meters in diameter, where urban furniture is placed that invites you to stroll calmly and do activities.
The selection and prioritization of schools is carried out in coordination with all the municipal areas involved and the following criteria are taken into account:
• Prioritization of children from 0 to 12 years old.
• Schools at complicated points of road safety.
• Schools with high environmental pollution, both air and noise.
• Centers with more need for promotion or with educational communities that participate in school and environment improvement programs.
• Schools designated by districts.
In addition, the new website has been launched
, in which you can consult all the updated information on the interventions and the map with the schools where you will act.
The entire process is being carried out together with the educational community, seeking complicity and dialogue. That is why yesterday the Monitoring Table of “We protect schools” was established as a space for monitoring the initiative, made up of municipal representatives, educational platforms and entities that work to reduce pollution or that intervene in public space and accessibility. There will also be a school setting table in each district.
“We protect schools” 2021
Next year the program will be extended to about 50 other schools, who already have the project finished and that will be added as resources become available. In addition, it will act in coordination with the districts in all the settings of educational centers in the city —585— to, at a minimum, signpost in a visible way for drivers who are close to a school, to increase attention and reduce speed.
The objective of the mandate is that in 2023 a total of 200 schools and educational centers from 0 to 12 years old in the city will already have a comfortable and pacified environment for traffic. That is equivalent to one in three schools of all the ones in Barcelona. Of the 200 centers, 138 will carry out specific actions, and in the rest, improvement actions included in other programs, such as the superblock program.
