Great music and multidisciplinarity in 10 historic villages with great national and international artists such as Joe Farnsworth, Javier Girotto, Gabriele Mirabassi, Greta Panettieri, Vince Abbracciante, Aldo Zunino and Andrea Pozza
From 5 July to 13 August 2023 we set off to discover Molise with the Borgo in Jazz Festival (www.borgoinjazzfestival.it), which turns ten this year. Seventeen concerts organized in ten historical centers of the Region – San Giuliano del Sannio, Baranello, Guardialfiera, Spinete, Ripalimosani, Sepino, Ferrazzano, Isernia, Pietracupa, Gambatesa – will feature great national and international artists such as Joe Farnsworth, Javier Girotto, Gabriele Mirabassi , Greta Panettieri, Giovanni Amato, Dario Deidda, Vince Abbracciante, Aldo Zunino and Andrea Pozza.
Born in 2014 from an initiative of the Molise saxophonist Nicola Concettini, and organized by the Borgo in Jazz Association of Gambatesa, the event has met with increasing success over the years thanks to the traveling events and concerts in the historic centers of Molise which, in addition to the promotion of jazz music, have enhanced the places, art and quality regional food and wine.
Relevant for 2023, the partnerships established with important realities on the national territory: the Massimo Urbani Award, the Roma Tre Teatro Palladium Foundation, the Monfrà Jazz Festival managed by the Le Muse European Academy of Art, the Musicamdo Association of Camerino.

It starts on 5 July from San Giuliano del Sannio where the press conference to present Borgo in Jazz 2023 will be held at 5.30pm, followed at 8.00pm by the concert by the Ferri, Quirico, Venditti Trio and at 9.00pm by dinner with an open jam session to all musicians. On 15 July the Festival reaches the village of Baranello where the Marco Mancini Trio will perform. On July 16, a stop in Guardialfiera with the live performance of The Big Easy Apple and on July 19 in Isernia, where an important tribute to Federico Fellini will be held with a concert by the New Talents Jazz Orchestra conducted by Mario Corvini, special guest the well-known clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi . On July 26, the great American drummer Joe Farnsworth arrives in Spinete, in trio with Giulio Scianatico and Bruno Montrone. Double concert on July 28 in Ripalimosani: at 10.00 pm the refined duo formed by the Argentine saxophonist Javier Girotto – one of the most acclaimed jazz instrumentalists in Italy – and the accordionist Vince Abbracciante will be the protagonists, while at 11.30 pm the AnyIdeas? 4tet followed by a jam session.
On 3 August in Sepino it is the turn of the great singer Greta Panettieri who will present the new album Into my garden with an excellent quintet. Double concert on 4 August in Ferrazzano: the first to take the stage at 10.00 pm will be the Norma Ensemble made up of four leading musicians of Italian jazz – Marcello Allulli, Enrico Zanisi, Jacopo Ferrazza and Valerio Profito – while at 11.30 pm Giacomo Serino will perform 4tet followed by a jam session. On August 5, he stops in Spinete with the brilliant trio formed by Andrea Pozza, Aldo Zunino and Giovanni Scasciamacchia.
On 9 August the festival arrives in Gambatesa: at 10.00 pm an event will be held in collaboration with the Roma Tre Teatro Palladium Foundation: the concert of the Roma Tre Jazz Band for the project “Sound for Silents III – Silent cinema with live music”. This will be followed by the performance of the winning musician of the Massimo Urbani 2023 Prize: a live concert organized in collaboration with the Musicamdo Association of Camerino. On July 10th we stay in Gambatesa with the Poems Trio formed by three other excellences of the national jazz scene: Giovanni Amato, Dario Deidda and Pietro Lussu. On 13 August, the last stage of the 10th edition of the festival, in the charming village of Pietracupa: concert by the Riccardo Marchese Quartet in collaboration with the Le Muse European Academy of Art.
Education and events for young musicians outside Molise:
Borgo in Jazz is increasingly involved in organizing events dedicated to the education and dissemination of jazz, to promote the artistic, cultural and social exchange between new generations of musicians belonging to different social and territorial backgrounds, offering them the opportunity to live significant experiences capable of leaving a deep mark in artistic and personal growth. The educational activities planned for 2023 make use of an extensive partnership that crosses the borders of the Molise Region: music high schools in the provinces of Rome, Campobasso and Viterbo, the Roma Tre University, lower secondary schools in the province of Campobasso, training affiliated to the Ass. Borgo in Jazz. The first event will be held on 13 June in Rome at the Teatro SS Aquila e Priscilla: the protagonists will be the students of three music high schools: the “Giordano Bruno” in Rome, the “Santa Rosa” in Viterbo, and the “GM Galanti” in Campobasso . It continues on July 12 in Campobasso at the Liceo Galanti with the live, open to the public with free admission, of the students of the schools of the province.
The Festival is organized with the contribution of the MiC – Ministry of Culture, the Molise Region – Department of Culture, the Municipalities of Gambatesa, Isernia, Spinete, Ripalimosani, Sepino, Pietracupa and the Pro loco of Baranello, Guardialfiera, Ferrazzano. It is part of the I-JAZZ circuit.
