Salem and Lynn Braces for Brush Fire Amidst High Wind and Dry Conditions
- A brush fire has spread to 130 acres, threatening homes in Salem and Lynn, Massachusetts
Extent of Fires: From Salem’s Spring Pond to Lynn
Local firefighters have been battling a fast-moving brush fire in Salem and Lynn for the past 24 hours. The fire, which began near Spring Pond close to Highland Avenue, has grown to 130 acres, according to Salem Fire Department Chief Alan Dionne.
The fire’s impact extends beyond Salem, with the neighboring town of Lynn also experiencing the intensity of the blaze. Despite the expansive area affected, officials have reported that so far, no structures have been destroyed.
Drought and Wind Fuel the Fire’s Spread
Salem’s dry and windy conditions have contributed to the fire’s rapid spread.Leon Dionne, Salem Fire Department Chief, mentioned the challenging circumstances, noting that the high winds and dry environment make fire control complex.
The Chief anticipates that these weather conditions could prevail on Monday, necessitating continued vigilance and preparedness. "We’re anticipating the same conditions (Monday), possibly a little bit of wind change. We are not too sure about that. We will wait and see what happens," Dionne said.
Helicopter Support and Homeowner Praise
To help combat the fire, the Air National Guard plans to continue using water drops from helicopters on Monday. These efforts, combined with the efforts of local firefighters, have been crucial in keeping the flames at bay from neighbors’ homes.
Several residents have expressed their gratitude towards firefighters. One resident highlighted the close call, saying, "They literally saved these two houses. If the fire had gotten out of control, there are woods all behind these houses and behind mine, it could have taken the whole neighborhood down."
Ongoing Investigation
Although the fire’s cause remains under investigation, officials are hopeful that the current containment efforts and upcoming weather forecasts (possibly including a shift in winds) will steer the situation in a favorable direction.
