Up to five complaints against various members of the Executive have been filed in recent days in French courts for failing, according to the plaintiffs, to take the necessary measures to fight Covid-19, which has already left almost 1,700 deaths in the country.

Targeted for the complaints are Prime Minister Édouard Philippe, Health Minister Olivier Véran, and his predecessor Agnès Buzyn, who could face charges such as involuntary manslaughter or failure to assist a person in distress. Justice will still have to decide whether to admit them for processing, but they show the discomfort of the population with the government’s management.

It all started with Agnès Buzyn’s confession last week to ‘Le Monde’. The former minister, who left office in mid-February to replace Benjamin Griveaux in the race for the mayoralty of Paris after the scandal of his sex tape, assured that already in January he warned the prime minister of the magnitude of the crisis. However, the Executive held the first round of the elections on March 15.

For the complainants, “she knew everything and did nothing,” argues the lawyer for a group of 600 doctors who has filed one of the complaints, Fabrice di Vizio. This group, named C19, accuses Philippe and Buzyn of “state lies”, and has received the support of more than 200,000 people on change.org.

Mask shortage

The lack of masks is another reason for complaint. «The Ministry tells us that it has ordered them and that they will arrive, but when? How many, “asked the lawyer this Thursday on the Europe 1 radio station. Another association and three individuals have also filed a complaint against the different members of the Executive.

The Minister of Health has assured that the masks will be arriving “progressively”, but many hospitals and personnel who fight in the front line against the Covid-19 already suffer from their shortage. Among them is the Police, in charge of controlling that the confinement is carried out. This Thursday, the set of police unions threatened to stop monitoring if they do not provide them with protection measures.
