At the FIFA World Cup, apparently, considerations about a modification of the summer transfer window and a change in the player contracts expiring on June 30 are progressing. The Reuters news agency has an internal document that contracts for players and coaches will be extended until the end of each summer season. The transfer windows should also be adapted to the new data. The German Press Agency also reported that a working group convened by FIFA because of the coronavirus pandemic had outlined the first options.

According to Reuters, the Fifa paper states that contracts that expire explicitly at the original end of a season should be extended to the new end date. This applies in the event that the season cannot be ended until the end of June due to the pandemic, but must be played out even longer. According to SPIEGEL, this would affect around a third of the player contracts in the Bundesliga.

All major European leagues have currently stopped playing, and the European Cup competitions have also been interrupted for the time being. A season extension from mid-May to late June may not be enough if many contracts lose their validity.

According to the plans, player contracts could now remain valid for different lengths of time depending on the season in the national leagues – until July. For example, if one league ends on July 10th and another on July 15th, the contracts would be extended accordingly. The strict transfer time, which would last until the end of August in the Bundesliga, could possibly be made more flexible to give clubs and professionals more planning freedom.

“This work has already started and will be carried out in consultation with all major interest groups, including confederations, member associations, clubs, leagues and players,” Fifa said. President Gianni Infantino had announced at the beginning of the week that the summer deadlines would be revised due to delays in the national leagues. “It takes tough measures,” he said.
