Wolfsburg – Sports director Jörg Schmadtke from the Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg has agreed with the club’s supervisory board to extend his contract until 2022.
The Lower Saxony confirmed to the German press agency corresponding reports of the “Sport Bild”, the “Kicker” and the “Sportbuzzer”. The 56-year-old has been managing director of Lower Saxony since 2018, his old contract runs until 2021. “On my part, there was an oral promise for another year, and on the other hand,” Schmadtke is quoted by the “Sportbuzzer”. The contract has not yet been signed.
«It’s fun to work here. And we are not finished yet. I like to stay at VfL because I want to move the club forward and implement projects, ”said Schmadtke. In winter, you want to sit down and decide how to proceed. Half a year before the end of the contract, a decision should be made as to whether the contract should be renewed. “This is a very good solution for everyone involved,” said the former goalkeeper, who previously worked for 1. FC Köln.
Wolfsburg took seventh place last season. So the former German champion must first compete in the Europa League qualification. On August 5 or 6, VfL will also play its second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk in the round of 16 of the 2019/20 Europa League season. Should VfL still make up their 1-2 deficit from the first game, they would take part in a final tournament in North Rhine-Westphalia from August 10th.
